Frequently Asked Questions
"
One on one tutoring, at this level and maturity is the only way to go, in my opinion. We found more services with group options but tutoring with (tutor) who worked around both of their busy schedules made it so much easier and well worth the money.

- What benefits result from a home environment between Tutor and
Student?
- Experience, comfort and trust between tutor and student are the
prerequisites for an excellent learning environment. Our professionals
will take time to get to know your student, their own skills and
styles, and what they hope to get out these sessions.
We do what we can to ease every student from peer pressure and fear
of wrong answers. We do what we can to make sure he or she is not
confused or afraid to ask.

Thank you for working w/ us. (Tutor) worked hard to help (student) through the material; it was a lot to get through in such a short time. She was patient and creative.

Summer Calculus Help
- Are we required to make a long term commitment in advance?
- Absolutely not. We do require, however, a minimum sign-up commitment
of six (6) sessions, for the most part out of respect for our tutors,
their driving times and schedules. We are so confident our methods
will improve your child's future, we see no need for parents to
make huge three or six months' financial commitments in advance.

- What typically takes place at the first tutoring session?
- First, we will begin a one-on-one "get to know each other"
discussion with your student. After that, a diagnostic test for
the subject will be administered. Simultaneously, our tutors will
request copies of current school assignments, grades, projects and
dates of upcoming topics and tests. While the test is being taken,
our tutor will review the documentation to obtain a true grasp of
what skills and concepts must be emphasized to best improve your
child's educational prospects.

- Is there a defined goal for these one-on-one
learning sessions?
- Two words: Building Independence. There are no shortcuts
on this road. Our tutors know better than to impose their own approach
to problems upon individual students.
We never are there just to "do the work." The tutor's
ultimate role extends beyond the role of answer-provider. She is
there to act as a guide, so that eventually the student can reach
correct answers in his or her own way, with a true framework and
understanding of the fundamentals involved.

Math Help & Skills
- My child just hates math. What if he becomes frustrated and wants
to stop?
- This is, sadly, a common development. We make it clear that "giving
up" is seldom an effective response to anything. And math is
not an exception. We will remain positive and flexible in this regard,
and always encourage further thought and work — no matter
how frustrating the original concepts may seem.

- My son has trouble completing homework
on a daily basis. Can you help?
- Many times, a simple response will solve it. Namely: it is often
the directions for assignments which create havoc for students,
not the assignments themselves. Many are petrified they are not
proceeding properly through each assigned step, and therefore refuse
to confront the work at all. We are there to ensure that attention
is paid initially to defining and responding to the precise requests
necessary to complete the lesson or assignment.

East Chapel Hill
- Will your tutor do most of the talking and explaining, or will
my child have any input?
- Our tutors are not there to show off their own skills. They are
there to improve your child's. We try to allow most conversations
to focus on them. Again, very basic needs must come first; until
trust is established, the finishing of an assignment or project
must temporarily become secondary.

- How will your tutors critique my very sensitive child?
- Our tutors
will let each student know, in any way they can, that they enjoy
the tutoring sessions and are proud of any and all efforts. To achieve
maximum possible benefits, these tutorial sessions must include
repeated statements of positive reinforcement. Only in this way
will your student's confidence in her own ability take flight.

- Do you have any special approaches with respect to Creative
Writing and Writing
in General?
- We try to listen to and discuss the paper as a whole before working
upon individual parts. Talking about what the whole paper says reaffirms
to our students that writing can be a valuable and effective form
of communication.
We normally begin by giving specific impressions and reactions,
so that the writer can hear what listeners or readers may understand
from what she has written. Discussing papers as a whole is helpful
for longer papers, or ones we do not have time to read through entirely
with the writer.
After addressing the writer's main concerns, or once the writer
has asked for an opinion on what to work on next, it's time to prioritize
areas that would benefit from attention. This almost always includes
careful attention and review of topic sentences, paragraph structure,
conclusions, conflicting styles, arguments, grammar, styles, tenses,
and punctuation.
